Baobob Sponsorship Level

~ $10,000 ~

The baobab tree is a native of tropical Africa and can live up to 2,000 years. The Kampong’s baobab is a towering and impressive specimen featuring a giant soft wooded trunk. The seed came from Dares Salaam, Tanzania in 1928 and was planted at Chapman Field. When blown down by Hurricane Cleo in 1964, it was given to Mrs. Catherine Sweeney and hauled to The Kampong on a flatbed truck and replanted in a fifteen foot diameter hole four and one-half feet deep. It has since developed branches to match its magnificent trunk. Hurricane Wilma took down our dear Baobab, but she has been righted and every effort is being made to save this extraordinary specimen.
