Renowned botanist David Fairchild introduced many flowering trees to Florida and inspired people to plant them.  The Royal Poinciana is the official flowering tree of Miami and the oldest Royal Poinciana in Miami is located at The Kampong.  It was planted at The Kampong by Marion Fairchild in 1917 when she and Dr. Fairchild resided there.

Baobab Sponsorship Level

$10,000

The baobab tree is a native of tropical Africa and can live up to 2,000 years. The Kampong’s baobab is a towering and impressive specimen featuring a giant soft wooded trunk. The seed came from Dares Salaam, Tanzania in 1928 and was planted at Chapman Field. When blown down by Hurricane Cleo in 1964, it was given to Mrs. Catherine Sweeney and hauled to The Kampong on a flatbed truck and replanted in a fifteen foot diameter hole four and one-half feet deep. It has since developed branches to match its magnificenttrunk. Hurricane Wilma took down our dear Baobab, but she has been righted and every effort is being made to save this extraordinary specimen.

Banyan Fig Sponsorship Level

$5,000

As you enter The Kampong, you drive through a magnificent specimen of Ficus benghalensis, the true banyan fig, which is 354 feet in diameter at breast level. The aerial roots hanging down from horizontal branches are constantly trimmed at about ten feet above the ground to allow vehicles to pass underneath them. Roots that have not been trimmed have taken root and formed massive columns on both sides of the drive. Several other species of Ficus are at The Kampong including Ficus religiosa from Burma – the famous “Bo” tree under which Gautama Buddha attained “Nirvana” (enlightenment).

Mango Sponsorship Level

$2,500

David Fairchild attempted to collect the best mangos in the world. His collection is constantly being updated in an effort to keep the world’s 20 or 30 best mangos available for tasting in Florida. At least one branch of Fairchild’s original introductions is preserved, while the other branches are top-worked or grafted with improved varieties. Many of these trees have early, midseason and late varieties on the same trunk, because of a lack of space on the property to plant more trees. There are now 57 named varieties of Mango at The Kampong.
